Tambuwal Walks Free on Bail — But Without His Passport

Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has been granted bail after being grilled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over an eye-watering N189 billion in alleged illegal cash withdrawals.

Tambuwal, who led Sokoto from 2015 to 2023, arrived at the EFCC’s Abuja headquarters around 11:30 am on Monday. Investigators questioned him for hours before detaining him overnight at the commission’s corporate office.

According to EFCC insiders, the withdrawals violate the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. One source bluntly said: “He is being held over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals to the tune of N189bn — in flagrant violation of the law.”

By Tuesday, Tambuwal was released on “not stringent” administrative bail after meeting the set conditions. However, the EFCC has kept his passport, a clear sign that the investigation is far from over.

Efforts to get an official comment from EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale failed — calls went unanswered and messages were ignored.
