The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that sixteen prisoners escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
The jailbreak happened in the early hours today, August 12, when inmates breached the facility’s security and overpowered prison staff on duty.
In a statement, NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar said the escapees not only broke through security barriers but also attacked officials, leaving several warders injured. Those injured are now receiving treatment in hospital.
Abubakar revealed that seven of the fugitives have already been tracked down and recaptured, while a manhunt is underway for the remaining nine.
Abubakar stated that the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has visited the facility and ordered a full-scale investigation into the escape. Any staff found guilty of negligence will face the consequences.
He added that all security agencies are now working together to find the remaining escapees. Members of the public are being urged to stay alert and report any suspicious movements to the nearest security office.
While investigations continue, the NCoS assured Nigerians that it remains fully committed to protecting public safety and keeping all custodial facilities secure across the country.
