Ohanaeze Ndigbo has warned that an Igbo presidency in 2027 will be impossible without sweeping electoral reforms.
In a hard-hitting statement by factional Deputy President-General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group said Nigeria’s electoral system is riddled with weaknesses that favour incumbents and undermine fair competition.
They cited loopholes in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), warning that a proposed return to manual collation of results could open the door to vote manipulation.
“Without meaningful reform, contesting against President Tinubu in 2027 will be a costly, futile gamble,” the statement read, urging prospective Igbo candidates to rethink their ambitions.
Ohanaeze said backing an unelectable candidate risks not only political failure but economic backlash for Igbo businesses, especially in cities like Lagos.
While acknowledging everyone’s constitutional right to run, the group insisted it must speak “the unvarnished truth” — that victory is “extremely unlikely” without change.
