Tragedy struck the Shooting Stars Sports Club on Monday morning as newly appointed assistant coach, Akin Olowokere, collapsed and died during a training session.
Olowokere, a former Sunshine Stars player and coach, was in the thick of action at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode when he suddenly went down, prompting frantic calls for medical assistance.
The squad had gathered to fine-tune preparations ahead of their Matchday 2 fixture in the 2025 ValueJet Cup when the incident happened. Team officials and medics raced to his side, before rushing him to a nearby hospital, whose location has not been disclosed.
Olowokere’s arrival at the Oluyole Warriors was part of a fresh coaching set-up brought in after the club cut ties with Gbenga Ogunbote and his crew. His sudden death has left teammates, fans, and the entire Nigerian football community in shock.
