The World Health Organisation WHO has announced that close to 100,000 cholera cases have been recorded in Sudan since July last year, warning that the country faces worsening hunger, displacement, and disease.
Sudan has been gripped by conflict since April 2023, when a power struggle erupted between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Daglo, leader of the Rapid Support Forces. The fighting has claimed tens of thousands of lives and left much of the country in crisis.
Since last year, oral cholera vaccination campaigns have been carried out in several states, including the capital, Khartoum. While infection numbers are now showing a downward trend, WHO warns that surveillance gaps and fragile progress remain.
Recent flooding, which has affected large areas of Sudan, is expected to intensify hunger and trigger further outbreaks of cholera, malaria, dengue, and other diseases.
