NAFDAC Calms Pubic Concerns Over GMOs

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has moved to calm growing public concerns about genetically modified foods in Nigeria. In a media appearance, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye stated that GMO foods are safe for consumption, provided safety protocols are followed. She emphasized that not all GMOs are harmful, and safety depends on the type of food and the scientific considerations involved.

Adeyeye highlighted the need for transparent labelling of genetically modified products so consumers can make informed decisions. She noted that the agency is working closely with the National Biosafety Management Agency, which oversees the safety and regulation of GMO products in the country.

NAFDAC’s Director-General called on consumers to check packaging labels before purchase encouraging Nigerians to look out for the agency’s certification and for clear indications when a product contains genetically modified ingredients.
