Myanmar’s acting president, Myin Swe, has passed away this morning in a hospital in Nay Pyi Taw, following neuro-degenerative and related neurological disorders.
Myanmar’s military government announced that a state funeral will be held in his honour. Myint Swe’s death marks another shift in Myanmar’s ongoing political crisis, which has seen years of military rule, civil unrest, and international isolation since the coup.
Myint Swe was appointed acting president following the February 2021 coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government. His role was largely ceremonial, with real power concentrated in the hands of military leader Min Aung Hlaing, who had been carrying out presidential duties since mid-2024. During his tenure, Myint Swe formally endorsed several extensions to Myanmar’s state of emergency, reinforcing military control.
