Women’s Reserved Seats Bill to Face House Vote in October

The House of Representatives will vote in October on a landmark bill to reserve special seats for women in parliament, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu has confirmed.

Speaking to women’s groups and civil society leaders, Kalu — who chairs the Constitution Review Committee — said the vote will coincide with other constitutional amendments when plenary resumes.

Currently, women make up just 3.8% of the House and hold four of 109 Senate seats. Kalu urged campaigners to keep lobbying religious, political, and community leaders ahead of the vote.

He also called on political parties to back female candidates, the media to promote inclusive narratives, and civil society to mentor and support aspiring women leaders.
