The Lagos State Government has issued a renewed warning to residents living in flood-prone areas, particularly in parts of Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle, urging them to temporarily relocate to higher ground. This follows continuous heavy rainfall that left several communities waterlogged earlier in the week, with concerns mounting over the potential for more severe flooding in the coming days.
Commissioner of environment, Tokunbo Wahab identified specific areas along the coastline and lowland zones as being at heightened risk, including parts of the Ajilete axis, Majidu in Ikorodu, and certain communities within the Lekki corridor.
Wahab attributed the threat to Lagos’s status as a coastal city and the increasing impact of climate change. While regions such as Epe, Mushin, and Ikeja are expected to remain relatively safe, residents in areas like Isheri, especially near the OPIC boundary, are being advised to stay alert as the rains persist.
