UniJos Professors Awarded Patent Rights For Anti-Tick Vaccine

The Federal Government has officially awarded a 20-year patent to the University of Jos for its groundbreaking invention of an Anti-Tick Vaccine, known as JUT-VAC-NG. The special license, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, grants the university exclusive rights to the vaccine aimed at boosting livestock health and development.

According to the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, the patent gives the University of Jos and its inventors full authority to benefit from and control the use of the innovation. The inventors, Professors Goni Dogo and Tanko Ishaya, represent the faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Computer Science, respectively.

The vaccine is expected to play a major role in combating tick-borne diseases that affect livestock across Nigeria and other parts of Africa. Officials say the breakthrough could reduce losses in the agricultural sector and enhance food security.

The university has warned that no individual or organization may use or reproduce the invention without formal consent, license, or agreement. The development marks a major milestone for Nigerian research and innovation on the global stage.
