NCDC Confirms 811 Cases Of Lassa Fever, 152 Related Deaths

Nigeria has recorded 811 confirmed cases of Lassa fever and 152 related deaths so far in 2025, according to the latest situation report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

The report, covering Week 28 of the year, indicates that 11 new cases were recorded in Ondo, Edo, and Benue States. The current case fatality rate stands at 18.7 percent—higher than the 17.3 percent reported at the same time last year.

Most of the confirmed cases have come from five states including Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi states around 89 percent. In total, 21 states across 105 local government areas have reported at least one confirmed case in 2025.

The NCDC has launched an environmental response campaign in high-burden states but says late presentation of cases, high treatment costs, and poor hygiene conditions continue to hamper efforts. The agency called on Nigerians to report any suspected symptoms such as fever, sore throat, chest pain, or hearing loss immediately to health authorities.
