BBNAIJA: LAWYER PETITIONS NBC, DEMANDS BAN OR REGULATION WITHIN 30 DAYS

Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has petitioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Nigeria, demanding an immediate ban or strict regulation of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) within 30 days, citing concerns over obscene, indecent, and profane content in the show’s 10th season.

In his petition, titled “Urgent Need to Ban or Regulate the Content of the Television Programme Described as Big Brother Naija for Obscene, Indecent, and Profane Content, Pursuant to the NBC Act 1999,” Idam argues that the show, currently in its second week, promotes “real-time obscene and pornographic actions” that lack educational, artistic, or literary value and contribute to moral decay, particularly among youth.

He highlighted that despite its 18+ rating, explicit content is freely shared on social media by the host company, making it accessible to underage viewers and the general public. Idam demands the show be restricted to highly regulated adult-only channels and that its online clips be prohibited.

He warned that failure to comply within 30 days would lead to legal action in a court of competent jurisdiction. Public reactions are mixed, with some supporting regulation due to concerns over negative societal impact, while others defend the show, citing its adult rating and viewer choice.
