The Nigerian Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations has strongly condemned the recent anti-Nigerian protest in Ghana, labeling it as unwarranted and contrary to the ideals of African unity and regional cooperation.
In its reaction, the Committee, led by Senator Aniekan Bassey, emphasized the need for calm and diplomacy, urging both nations to uphold their historical ties and shared responsibilities within the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS. The senator reaffirmed that actions like the protest undermine regional integration and the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons.
Senator Bassey commended the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their swift intervention through diplomatic channels, acknowledging the efforts of the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissions for working together to ease tensions and maintain mutual understanding between both nations.
Reassuring Nigerians living in Ghana, the Senate Committee stated that the safety and rights of Nigerian citizens abroad remain a national priority. It called on Ghanaians to act within ECOWAS principles of tolerance and unity, and encouraged Nigerians in Ghana to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and confident in ongoing diplomatic resolutions.
