Federal Government Defends Upgrade of Murtala Muhammed International Airport

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a N712.3 billion upgrade of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, describing it as a transformative project that will elevate the facility to world-class status. Scheduled for completion within two years, the upgrade is part of efforts to position Lagos as a major aviation hub in West Africa and will be financed entirely through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund.

The overhaul, approved last week by the Federal Executive Council, will include a complete reconstruction of Terminal 1 and a redesign of Terminal 2, which was introduced during the Buhari administration. In addition, the upgrade will cover improvements to aircraft parking areas, aprons, hangars, road networks, car parks, and the international terminal.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the airport, which handles 67 percent of Nigeria’s air traffic, will be brought in line with global standards through this wide-ranging renovation. Keyamo defended the project’s cost, noting that similar upgrades are ongoing at major international airports like JFK in New York emphasizing that modernizing aviation infrastructure is a global trend and essential to meeting future travel demands.
