Clarence Peters: “I Made Every Mistake My Father Made”

Popular Nigerian music video director Clarence Peters has shared a personal reflection about his relationship with his father, legendary Afro-Juju musician Sir Shina Peters.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, Clarence revealed that he forgave his father even before they had a conversation—after coming to the realisation that he had made every single mistake his father once made.

“I made every single mistake my father made,” Clarence said. “I’m just lucky that time and tech saved me from it being as catastrophic as his own. So, the moment I realised that, I forgave him instantly—even before we had a conversation. That was in 2014 or 2015. That was when I became an adult. That was the beginning of my journey into adulthood. I’m still on the journey. You’re always on the journey.”

Clarence Peters, now 41, is the son of Sir Shina Peters and veteran Nollywood actress Clarion Chukwura.

Over the years, Peters has opened up about his difficult family history. In a past interview, he revealed that his mother once considered aborting him but changed her mind because she believed he was the reincarnation of her father, whom she had lost at age 11.

In a chat with media personality Chude Jideonwo in February 2025, Clarence shared more about his struggle with his father’s legacy.

“I would have loved to judge my dad for how he treated my mother, but I’m not in a position to,” he said.

He also admitted that, though he tries to be different in how he relates with women, he’s not perfect.

“I tried not to be like my father with women, but I’m not perfect.”

Clarence Peters remains one of Nigeria’s most respected visual storytellers. His honesty about growth, forgiveness, and family continues to strike a chord with fans and creatives across the continent.
