President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian governors to do more to improve the lives of ordinary citizens, especially those in rural areas urging them to invest in rural electrification, modern farming tools, better roads and schools, and serious efforts to reduce poverty.
The President made this appeal during the 150th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) held at the State House in Abuja.
Tinubu while calling for more proactive actions to change the story of Nigerians especially in the rural areas added that the economy is recovering, but the government must boost growth at the grassroots.
The President encouraged state governors to join hands with the Federal Government to bring lasting development to rural Nigeria, highlighting the need for modern agricultural practices, more secure communities, and school feeding programmes to help increase school enrolment.
To fast-track his administration’s major infrastructure plans, Tinubu ordered the formation of a new committee under NEC to focus on legacy projects like the Lagos-Calabar and Sokoto-Badagry super highways. He also moved the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation directly under the presidency to make project execution smoother.
At the meeting, NEC fully endorsed the new Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme which aims to bring real change to all 8,809 political wards in Nigeria, across all 36 states. It is a joint effort by the federal, state, and local governments, and part of Tinubu’s broader goal of building a $1 trillion dollar economy by 2030.
