Academic Work Comes to a Halt at LASU as Staff Begin Indefinite Strike

Students at Lagos State University (LASU) have been left stranded as all academic activities have been suspended due to an indefinite strike by the university’s staff unions.

The strike, which began on Thursday, was called by the university’s Joint Action Committee (JAC) made up of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

In a letter dated 31 July 2025 and addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the unions said they had no choice but to withdraw their services because of unresolved issues with the university management.

The notice, signed by the heads and secretaries of both ASUU-LASU and SSANU-LASU, stated clearly that all staff—both academic and non-academic—across LASU’s campuses, including LASUCOM in Ikeja and the Epe campus, should stop work and leave their duty posts immediately.

“Following an emergency meeting, we resolved to begin an indefinite strike starting Thursday, 31st July,” the letter read. “This action will continue until all staff demands are met by the appropriate authorities.”

They added, “We appreciate your support in the past, but we must now take this action in the interest of our members.”

The timing couldn’t be worse for students, who were preparing to start their second-semester exams for the 2024/2025 academic session on Monday. With the strike in full effect, the exams and all academic work have been put on hold until further notice.

As of now, there has been no official response from the university management.
