The Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, has congratulated the Super Falcons of Nigeria on their triumphant victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), held in Rabat, Morocco, where they secured a record-extending 10th continental title.
In a statement issued shortly after the final whistle, Comrade Ikpang lauded the Nigerian team for displaying exceptional resilience, tactical discipline, and true grit, especially as they came from behind to defeat the host nation, Morocco, in front of a charged home crowd.
“The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit,” she said.
“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation entrusted to you. You have once again lifted the pride of Africa’s most successful women’s football team and inspired millions of girls across the continent.”
The match, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, ended with a 3-2 win in favour of Nigeria.
Comrade Bassey described the Falcons’ achievement as a victory for all Nigerian women, stating that it showcases what women can achieve when given the right support, visibility, and encouragement.
She called on the Nigerian government, sports authorities, and corporate bodies to continue investing in women’s football, ensuring equal opportunities and reward for the women who bring glory to the country.
“As Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, and on behalf of over 250 female journalists under our umbrella, we celebrate this golden moment with you. We are proud to be your voice, your storytellers, and your biggest fans. You are champions, and we salute you!”
