WAFCON 2024: Nigeria’s Super Falcons To Face South Africa In Thrilling Semi-Final Clash

Football fans across Africa are in for a treat as two of the continent’s biggest rivals, Nigeria and South Africa, prepare to go head-to-head in what promises to be a thrilling semi-final at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Super Falcons, nine-time champions of the tournament, booked their place in the semi-final after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Cameroon. South Africa’s Banyana Banyana also showed their strength, cruising past Tunisia in a confident 2-0 victory.

Now, the stage is set for a mouthwatering encounter between two sides with a long-standing rivalry and rich footballing history. The clash will take place on Wednesday, 24 July, at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat, Morocco.

Familiar Foes, High Stakes

Nigeria and South Africa have faced each other in several WAFCON tournaments, including the dramatic 2018 final where Nigeria edged past South Africa on penalties to lift the trophy. However, the tide shifted in 2022 when South Africa stunned the Super Falcons with a 2-1 win in the group stage, eventually going on to win their first WAFCON title.

This time, both teams are hungry—Nigeria are looking to reclaim their crown, while South Africa are determined to prove they are still the queens of African women’s football.

Speaking after their quarter-final win, Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum said, “We know South Africa very well. They are strong, fast, and organised. But we are ready. Our focus is on winning.”

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis was equally confident. “Nigeria is a great team, but we’ve beaten them before. We’re going to give everything,” she said.

Star Power On Show

The match is expected to feature some of Africa’s brightest football stars. Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala remains a key figure in attack, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has been a standout performer in this tournament.

For South Africa, Thembi Kgatlana and Jermaine Seoposenwe have been in fine form, causing problems for defenders with their pace and creativity.

With both teams packed with talent and hungry for glory, fans can expect end-to-end action, fierce tackles, and maybe even a few goals to remember.

A Ticket To Paris?

Beyond the bragging rights and a place in the final, this match carries even greater significance. The two WAFCON finalists will automatically qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. For Nigeria, that would mark a long-awaited return after missing out on the last three Olympic Games.

As the countdown to kick-off begins, excitement is building among fans and pundits alike. Whether you wear green or gold, one thing is certain — this semi-final will be one to remember.

Kick-off: Wednesday, 24 July | Stade Moulay Hassan, Rabat | Time: 6 PM (local time)
